World's Largest Self-Righting Fireboat Restores Balance in 6 Seconds

The Hong Kong Fire Services Department (FSD) has acquired a USD 16 million self-righting fireboat that can recover from a capsize position in just a few seconds.

Technical Features:

  • The world's largest self-righting fireboat, built by Taiwan's Lungteh Shipbuilding in Yilan County
  • Designed for maritime search and rescue operations in Hong Kong waters
  • Expected to arrive in Hong Kong by June 2024 after shipyard trials
  • Length: 35-40 meters, weight: approximately 200 tons
  • Undergoes months of testing and crew training at Suao Port in Yilan County before delivery
  • Named "Fireboat 12"

Self-Righting Mechanism:

  • Equipped with a self-righting mechanism that allows the vessel to return to an upright position after capsizing, ensuring continuity of rescue and firefighting operations
  • Enhanced safety for firefighters on board, increased maneuverability in adverse weather conditions
  • Ballast arm with a rotating range of 0 to 180 degrees

Operational Needs:

  • The FSD has witnessed an increasing number of marine emergencies in waters east of Hong Kong in recent years
  • New vessel aims to boost the department's capabilities in conducting search and rescue operations in challenging sea conditions
  • FSD plans to replace Fireboat 2 and Command Boats 1 and 2 over the next few years with the new fireboat and two command vessels
