Facial Expression Prediction and Mirroring
Roboticists are continuously developing robots with robust speech communication capabilities, largely driven by advancements in large language models such as ChatGPT. However, their non-verbal communication skills, particularly facial expressions, remain limited. Designing robots that not only display a range of facial expressions but also exhibit timely expressiveness is a significant challenge.
Emo: A Game-Changer in Human-Robot Non-Verbal Interaction
The Creative Machines Lab at Columbia University's School of Engineering has been working on this issue for over five years. In a recent paper published in Science Robotics, the team introduced Emo, an AI-powered robot capable of predicting human facial expressions and mirroring them in real-time. It can anticipate a smile approximately 840 milliseconds before a human does and respond with a smile of its own.
Advanced Facial Movements
In addition to mirroring smiles, Emo can also portray six basic emotions: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise, as well as a variety of more nuanced reactions. This is enabled by artificial muscles made from cables and motors. Emo expresses emotions by pulling the artificial muscles at specific points on its face.
Artificial Intelligence for Facial Expression Recognition
The research team employed AI software to predict human facial expressions and generate corresponding robotic ones: "Emo tackles these challenges by employing 26 motors, a soft skin, and camera-equipped eyes. This allows it to perform non-verbal communication, such as eye contact and facial expressions. Emo is equipped with several AI models, including human face detection, facial actuator control for mimicking facial expressions, and even human facial expression forecasting. This allows Emo to respond in a way that feels both timely and authentic."
Training the Robot for Expressiveness
To train the robot's expressiveness, the team placed Emo in front of a camera and had it move randomly. Over the course of several hours, the robot learned the relationship between facial expressions and motor commands—similar to how humans practice facial expressions by looking in a mirror. The team refers to this as "self-imitation," akin to humans' ability to imagine what they would look like while performing a certain expression.
Real-Time Facial Expression Integration
Next, the research team showed Emo videos of human facial expressions one frame at a time. After hours of training, Emo became capable of anticipating expressions by observing subtle facial changes as a human begins to form a smile.
"I believe that accurately predicting human facial expressions is a game-changer for human-robot interaction," said Yuhang Hu, a PhD student in the Creative Machines Lab and a member of the research team. "Previously, robots were not designed to consider human expressions during their interactions. Now, robots can integrate facial expressions into their responses.
Building Trust through Real-Time Expressions
"Having robots mirror human expressions in real time not only improves the quality of interaction but also fosters trust between humans and robots. In the future, when you interact with a robot, it will be observing and interpreting your facial expressions, just like a real human," Hu added.
Future Developments
The research team plans to incorporate speech capabilities into Emo. "Our next step involves integrating natural language communication abilities," Hu said. "This will allow Emo to engage in more complex and nuanced conversations."
