Unique Architecture and History

Setenil de las Bodegas' history stretches back to prehistoric times. Early inhabitants found shelter in natural caves carved into the rock formations. Over time, as civilizations evolved and the population grew, so too did the residents' ambition. Rather than seek new lands, they creatively expanded and adapted the caves into modern homes and commercial spaces.
The town's name hints at its history. "Setenil" is thought to originate from the Latin phrase "septem nihil," referring to the seven times Catholic rulers failed to conquer the territory from the Moorish occupants. It was only on the seventh attempt that they prevailed. Later, the locals used the cool spaces beneath the rock to store local produce, and the town's name was amended to include "Bodegas," either in remembrance of vineyards destroyed by pests or as a nod to the caves that sustained the town.

Beyond the ubiquitous white walls, brightly colored window frames and vibrant flower pots captivate visitors. Narrow streets weave through the rock formations, creating a scenic and romantic setting.
Local Life and Attractions
Agriculture is Setenil's main industry, but tourism flourishes throughout the year, with visitors flocking to this unique destination. The town's two main streets, set on either side of the Guadalupe River, are known as Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra (Sun Caves and Shadow Caves). Their names reflect the effect created by the overhanging rocks, blocking out the sunlight over the streets.
