Rare Species Found on Porch
On May 13, local authorities in Ho Chi Minh City received a rare hornbill bird from a resident in Hoc Mon district.
Trinh Duc Hung, a resident of Xuan Thoi Dong commune, discovered the bird perched on his porch and promptly captured it. Using the internet, Hung identified the bird as a rare species and contacted authorities for its safekeeping.
Identification and Health Assessment
The bird was identified as a female Wreathed Hornbill (scientific name: Rhyticeros undulatus), a critically endangered species. It weighed approximately 1 kg. Upon examination, authorities noticed signs of weakness, feather loss on its chest and legs, and flight difficulties.
Recent Discoveries of Rare Animals
In recent weeks, several rare animals have been reported in Ho Chi Minh City. On April 21, a Peacock Pheasant was captured by residents and handed over to authorities. On April 24, a Great Hornbill was discovered and rescued from the grounds of Van Don Secondary School. And on April 20, a White-bellied Woodpecker was voluntarily surrendered to authorities by a resident of Xuan Thoi Dong commune.
