Relentless Rainfall Triggers Widespread Flooding
Since last night, torrential rainfall has battered Ha Giang province, causing the Lo River to surge to unprecedented levels, reaching critical alert status and marking the highest water level in nearly 40 years.
Three Casualties and Extensive Damage
As of 10/06/2022, the Ha Giang Provincial Police has released an urgent report regarding the severe flooding situation. Heavy rainfall and landslides have wreaked havoc throughout the province since the night of 9/06/2022, leading to tragic casualties and substantial property damage.
The relentless rainfall has caused a dramatic rise in the Lo River, surpassing the 3rd warning level by approximately 59 cm at the Ha Giang hydrological station as of 7 am. This unprecedented flood has resulted in widespread inundation across Ha Giang City, Vi Xuyen District, and surrounding areas.
Landslides and Entrapment
In addition to flooding, the torrential downpour has triggered landslides from mountain slopes, blocking roads and submerging streams. Several tourists and locals have reportedly been trapped due to the impassable conditions.
Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts
Following the onset of the floods, police officers have swiftly mobilized personnel, equipment, and resources to collaborate with other authorities and the local community in rescue and recovery operations. Notably, officers swiftly breached the roof of a house in Ha Giang City, successfully rescuing four people trapped within due to the severe flooding.
Tragic Loss of Life and Property Damage
As of 9 am today, the disaster has claimed the lives of three individuals. Two fatalities occurred in Hoang Su Phi District due to drowning, while one person in Quan Ba District was killed in a landslide. The estimated property damage is estimated at approximately 9.5 billion VND.
Safety Measures and Evacuation Assistance
Authorities have erected warning signs and enforced restrictions to prevent public access and movement near the Nho Que River. Emergency response teams have also been working tirelessly to assist residents in evacuating from flooded areas.
Impassable Roads and Isolated Communities
The rapid rise in floodwaters has left many families stranded without sufficient time to evacuate. They have resorted to seeking refuge on rooftops, awaiting assistance from emergency services. Several vehicles owned by residents in Phuong Thien Commune, Ha Giang City, have been submerged.
Infrastructure Damage
The raging floodwaters have severely damaged infrastructure. The suspension bridge leading to Ha Son Hamlet in Thanh Thuy Commune has collapsed, isolating the community. Multiple roads have also been rendered impassable due to landslides.
CSGT Utilizes Specialized Vehicles for Rescue Operations
In response to the unprecedented flooding, the Traffic Police (CSGT) have deployed specialized vehicles to rescue trapped tourists and residents.
Summary
The catastrophic flooding in Ha Giang has created a dire situation, with the highest Lo River water levels recorded in almost four decades. The relentless rainfall has triggered landslides, widespread flooding, and the loss of three lives, while causing significant property damage.
