How to Detect Hidden Cameras for Safety in Public Places

Hidden Camera Crisis

A 2023 VnExpress survey revealed that 58% of over a thousand respondents have encountered or suspected hidden cameras. According to Vu Ngoc Son, Technical Director of NCS, these cameras are primarily from China and are often cleverly disguised or integrated into everyday objects.

Five Ways to Identify Hidden Cameras

1. Visual Inspection

Thoroughly examine hotel rooms, public restrooms, and other similar spaces for suspicious devices, paying particular attention to:

  • TVs, remote controls, power outlets
  • Underneath furniture, doorframes
  • Decorative objects (e.g., wall clocks, lamps, stuffed animals)
  • Smoke detectors and air purifiers

2. Darkness Test

Cameras often emit faint LED lights or a glow, especially in low-light conditions. Draw curtains and turn off lights. Search for any unusual glows.

3. Mirror Examination

Mini cameras may be hidden behind mirrors. Place your finger on a mirror and check the gap between your finger and the reflection. If there is none, the mirror may be two-way and could contain a camera.

4. Smartphone Detection

Install mobile phone apps specifically designed to detect hidden cameras. These apps use the phone's sensors and algorithms to identify suspicious devices.

5. Professional Device Detection

Invest in a specialized infrared detector or camera locator for more comprehensive detection, particularly if you frequently travel or visit unfamiliar places.

Preventing Privacy Breaches

By implementing these simple techniques, individuals can significantly reduce the risk of their privacy being compromised by hidden cameras in public settings.
