Appearance and Effects
According to the People's Committee of Tho Chau Commune, a red tide has made its first appearance in the waters surrounding the island. Covering an area of approximately 1,000 square meters, the red tide affected the waters off Bai Mun Beach on the southwest side of Tho Chau Island in Phu Quoc City.
Shortly after the tide was observed, residents noticed several dead aquatic creatures, primarily small fish, washing ashore. By the morning of June 13, the affected area had reduced in size and the water had become less discolored, gradually dissipating.
Local Impact
Tho Chau Commune Secretary Do Van Dung stated that Bai Mun Beach is not frequented by fishing boats or many people. No significant damages or losses have been reported by the local authorities due to the red tide.
Causes and Concerns
Red tide, also known as algal bloom, occurs when excessive algae undergo rapid reproduction. This phenomenon is independent of tidal movements and can occur in estuaries, oceans, or freshwater sources. The accumulated algae often discolors the water, giving it shades of purple, pink, blue, or red.
Depending on the type of algae involved, red tides can produce natural toxins that deplete oxygen levels, causing mass die-offs among fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. Ingesting contaminated organisms can also pose health risks to humans. Might you like https://sharing.io.vn/
