Whale's Appearance Sparks Concern
On July 22nd, a black whale was sighted near the Kỳ Co tourist area in Quy Nhon, Bình Äịnh, causing a stir among locals and tourists. The whale's appearance was accompanied by concerning signs, including noticeable scratches on its back and a seemingly labored swimming and breathing pattern.

Kỳ Co rescue teams were quickly deployed to provide assistance, but before intervention could be implemented, the whale swam further out to sea. However, after almost half an hour, it returned to the area close to shore.
Whale's Identity Remains Uncertain
To gain a better understanding of the situation, a marine mammal expert was consulted. Based on the whale's appearance from a distance, the expert suggested it might be a Melon-headed whale, a species rarely observed in Vietnam. Although no close-up images were available for verification, the expert's assumption was based on the whale's silhouette and identifying characteristics.
While the Melon-headed whale was the leading hypothesis, two other similar species, the False killer whale and the Pygmy killer whale, have also been documented in Vietnamese waters. To definitively identify the whale, observing its belly is crucial. A white patch on the belly is a distinctive feature of the Melon-headed whale.
